Spencer Alexander Lawyers Pty Ltd (we, us, the firm) takes the privacy of the people we deal with seriously. This policy explains how we handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). It applies to this website and to our dealings with clients, enquirers, referrers and other contacts, and it sits alongside the duties of confidentiality, and where applicable legal professional privilege, that we owe as a law practice.
What we collect
We collect personal information that you give us directly. That includes: your name, contact details and the content of your message when you use the enquiry form on this website or email or call us; your email address if you ask to receive a resource or updates from us; and the information you provide if you engage us to act for you, which can include sensitive information relevant to your matter. We only collect what we reasonably need.
The website enquiry form
The enquiry form on our contact page is delivered by a third party form service (FormSubmit), which transmits what you submit to our email. The form's contents pass through that provider's systems in order to reach us. Please do not include sensitive detail about your matter in a website enquiry: a name, contact details and a general description are all we need to arrange a conversation, and anything you tell us once we speak is protected by our professional obligations.
Cookies and analytics
This website does not set advertising cookies and does not run third party analytics or tracking scripts. Our hosting provider (GitHub Pages) may keep standard technical logs, such as IP addresses and pages requested, to operate and secure the service.
How we use personal information
We use personal information to respond to enquiries, to provide legal services, to manage our relationship with you, to send you information you have asked for, and to meet our legal and professional obligations. If you have subscribed to receive updates or resources, every email we send includes a simple way to opt out, and we stop immediately when you do.
Disclosure
We do not sell personal information. We disclose it only as needed to provide our services (for example to barristers, experts or other professionals engaged for your matter, with your knowledge), where you consent, or where the law requires or permits it. Information clients give us in the course of a matter is held in confidence in accordance with our professional conduct obligations.
Storage and security
We store information in our email, document and practice systems, some of which are reputable cloud services that may store data outside Australia. We take reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, interference, loss and unauthorised access, and to destroy or de-identify it when it is no longer needed, subject to our record keeping obligations as a law practice.
Access, correction and complaints
You can ask us what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or raise a privacy concern by emailing contact@spenceralexander.com.au or calling (03) 9125 8355. We will respond within a reasonable time. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au).
